Facing a rainy day, we decided to hire Slovenia 4 Seasons to take us on a tour of the Cave & Castle. We called him the night before and he was friendly and willing to escort our family of 6 despite the short notice and the holiday. We enjoyed our day immensely, and count it as one of the best days of our 3-week trip to Austria, Slovenia and Croatia. Friendly, extremely knowledgeable and English-speaking. Slovenian coast and Piran, the dream city tour - July 2017

“Spectacular scenery with 5-star personalized and attentive service!” My multigenerational family, including two toddler daughters and 70 year-old mother, loved our experience with Slovenia 4 Seasons! We serendipitously found their brochure in the lobby of our hotel, the Starhotels Savoia Excelsior Palace in Trieste. Thus began the best part of our trip, which up until then had consisted of lovely but somewhat impersonal train rides through the Swiss Alps and a self-guided (i.e. lots of walking in the hot sun, waiting in line behind hordes of other tourists, overpaying for water taxis) tour of Venice. We had the time of our lives with Slovenia 4 Seasons, with our jovial tour guide Jernej regaling us with the history and culture of Slovenia and Italy as we were driven smoothly in an air-conditioned and very comfortable minivan through the pristine countryside and perfectly preserved storybook villages of Slovenia--just about half an hour from Trieste, but so orderly and clean compared to Italy--and unspoiled due to its status as a hidden gem and also the national character of cleanliness and pride in caring for their small but self-sufficient country. On the first day, we drove up the mountains to a hilltop playground where my daughters gleefully swung on monkey bars seemingly located at the top of this new world, then back downhill through rich green forests, and around picturesque stone and stucco clad villages, each with a proud little church that hosts every villager's wedding, funeral, and a book that contains hundreds of years of ancestry records. Our tots found the bumpy cobblestone streets of Groznjan, a beautifully-preserved and refreshingly uncrowded medieval Croatian village, to be as charming as they were fun and challenging for their little feet to traverse, an entertaining obstacle course on the way to a feast of sumptuous prawns and grilled fish. We ended the day in Lipica, the site of the Lipizzaner stud farm with gorgeous white horses as well as three roly-poly ponies that the girls delighted in meeting. The next day Jernej took us to the graceful capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana, where we visited the colorful and spotless and bustling city center and delicious Farmer's Market. The highlight for the girls, however, was a fantastical indoor playground--Mala Ulica--with a little kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and cafe where they were served freshly squeezed orange juice, grilled cheese, and milk. It was hard to convince them to leave, but our next stop was the most spectacular yet--the dramatic Predjama Castle, built into the side of a cliff with a soaring network of caves extending overhead and through to the other side of the mountain. Jernej introduced us to his friends at the welcoming onsite restaurant, where we dined on savory venison goulash. Our experience with Slovenia 4 Seasons could not have been better or more personalized to our needs and interests--Jernej was willing to literally drive us anywhere we wanted to explore, and stop anywhere for photo ops--and allowed us to see and do so much more, in comfort and safety, than ever would have been possible on our own. We wish we could take them with us on all of our travels--having spent time with tour guides from all over the world, their service truly stands out for their attentiveness, flexibility, creativity, and warmth. We can't wait to go back and see more with Slovenia 4 Seasons!

Postojna Caves and Predjama Castle tour - June 2017

This review is overdue as I went to Slovenia in June 2017, but definitely wanted to write about my great experience with Andrej and the spelunking guide (I'm sorry, I have forgotten his name). Slovenia has a ton of cave systems, so visiting Slovenia on a solo trip, I definitely wanted to go cave exploring, but outside the standard tourist caves. I found that spelunking is not really a commercialized activity in Slovenia and am so glad I found Andrej! He and I exchanged a few emails back and forth (very communicative) and he warned me in advance that it was a very active experience. Boy was he right! I am an active hiker and runner and not afraid of many things when it comes to the outdoors and adrenaline pumping activities, but this was certainly one of the scariest, riskiest and unique adventures I've ever had.

Because I was traveling from Bovec (quite a drive and I don't recommend the long drive to Postojna), I met Andrej on the side of the road off the highway and followed him to the cave entrance where we met the spelunking guide. We suited up in full on janitor (spelunking) suits as well as helmets with lights, extra batteries, boots and paddles. The cave we visited is not a tourist cave and dangerous without a guide (in my opinion). It is also a water cave, hence the paddles carried throughout during the 3-4 hour spelunking trip.

It was chilly in the cave and pitch black (without the headlamp) as we traveled further and the size of the cave was shocking - it was unbelievably gigantic and I've never seen anything like it in my entire life. The first part of the cave was mostly paved, but the further in we went, it definitely became full on mode spelunking. I was thankful that Andrej and the spelunking guide were both there, helping me as I slipped on some of the very wet and muddy rocks. One very interesting creature we saw throughout the cave in the water was the Human Fish! I don't think it's an actual fish, but that's the nickname and once you Google it, you'll understand why. As I mentioned, the cave is a water cave so there were times where we had to paddle to get further into the cave. There were rafts already in the cave, which the guide and Andrej helped bring down. Definitely tiring paddling, but it was a blast and just an amazing experience being in the water in a gigantic cave. There was one point where we had to climb a ladder (which completely freaked me out) because it didn't really seem stable and on the way back, there was an option to either climb back down the ladder (no way) or climb between two walls to get down. Honestly, neither options were appealing at first, but the wall definitely ended up being better, ha. I will admit that out of fear for my life, I tried to memorize a lot of the route as we ventured throughout the cave. The only person who knew the cave well was the spelunking guide and what if something happened to him... (haha). Thankfully, nothing bad happened and appreciated both Andrej and the spelunking guide helping me out in all the tough spots throughout the cave. Postojna Caves and Predjama Castle tour - April 2018

2 days spent with Andrej was not only a great taster of Slovenian sights but a fantastic lesson in Slovenian history, heritage and tradition. Andrej customised the tour to our interests, taking a small detour to show us some local ski resorts at our request once he knew we were avid skiers. He was also able to adapt our itinerary perfectly given inclement weather without missing out on any sights. Andrej obviously takes great pride in his business as vehicles were clean, comfortable, roomy and he was always on time for arranged pick ups. AMAIZING TOUR IN SLOVENIA. Andrej was a great tour guide and showed us so much in just about 5 hours from our cruise stop in Koper. We visited the beautiful Predjama castle and climbed up the steps inside to the top to experience amazing views (our cruise line's excursion only visited the outside). Then we visited the Postojna caves which were just incredible with a train that takes you 15 minutes into the depth of the caves - have never seen anything like this. Andrej also showed us a few other sites along the way and helped us to understand the history and culture of Slovenia. He was very relaxed and a pleasure to spend time with. I would highly recommend.
