Some cities are just different. The melting pot of different cultures, nations and religions. Spectacular Trieste, one of Italy’s most impressive cities.
After long war with the Republic of Venice, Trieste, in 1382, petitioned the Habsburgs to become part of Austria, of which it remained until annexed by the Kingdom of Italy following the end of World War I. After the World War II, together with most of Istria peninsula became a Free Territory of Trieste, to be finally ceded to Italy only in 1954.
Our trip will first reaches its historical part, the site of ancient Roman Ruins of Trieste on San Giusto hill, which include the theatre, the forum and an Augustan Triumphal Arch. Next we will see the old St. Giusto church and the medieval castle with a beautiful panoramic view of Bay of Trieste. Afterwards we tour the elegant seafront and Italy’s largest square overlooking the sea, Piazza Unità d’Italia, Canal Grande and many more sights in the old town.
For coffee lovers Trieste is also known as home of Italy´s coffee culture, beeing the main European port for coffee import during the Austrian times. Afterwards we will continue to the Miramare castle, spectacularly built on a Karstic rocky promontory above the waters of the Gulf. The Miramare castle is a 19 century castle, designed by Carl Junker, built from 1856 to 1860 for Austrian Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian and his wife, Charlotte of Belgium, later Emperor Maximilian I and Empress Carlota of Mexico. The castle’s grounds include an extensive cliff and seashore park of 22 hectares (54 acres) designed by the Archduke. The grounds were completely re-landscaped to feature numerous tropical species of trees and plants.
The castle is a jewel of Hapsburg empire, highlighted by the Duke’s bedroom and office that were modelled after the cabin and stern wardroom of the warship that he commanded to navigate the seas.
